The market and street are named after Albert Cuyp, a famous painter from 17th century. In the initial stages, the market started as an off the cuff collection of pushcarts and street traders. But, the beginning of the 20th century saw that market becoming so much chaotic that the government had to officially decide to set-up a market. At that time, the market used to be held only on the Saturday evenings. It was only in the year 1912 that the evening market became a day time market and started to open six days in a week. At first the street used to be accessible during the market opening hours, but now it has been years that during the market hours, the street is completely closed off.

This market is as famous with tourists as is with locals. You think of something, and you are sure to find it in this street market. Yes, you can buy almost everything from here, whether it is fruits, vegetables, cheese, spices, clothes, electronics, beddings and cosmetics. The best part is that they are available at very cheap prices.

The market opening timings are from 9 in the morning to around 5 in the evening, Monday to Saturday. The market can get very crowded, especially if it is a Saturday or a sunny day. The market sometimes closes early, or does not works during bad weather days.
