Amsterdam Hotels near Anne Frank House

If you require a hotel near to the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, you will have many to choose from as it is situated very lcose to the center. Amsterdam is quite small and any accommodation in the central area will allow you to walk to the house in only a few minutes. Joordan can be found just to the west of Damrak and Dam Square, a popular area with many tourist and luxury hotels.

An icon of the darker side of the twentieth century, Anne Frank's compelling story continues to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors to the house she hid in on the Prinsengracht. The house where the Franks famously hid from the Nazis is far and away the biggest tourist draw in all of Amsterdam, attracting almost a million visitors annually.

Amsterdam was occupied very early on during World War II. Slowly but surely the Nazis introduced measures restricting the movements, social lives, and freedoms of the city's large Jewish population. The Frank family eventually took refuge in the annex behind the family business. Young Anne kept a diary of the ordeal which her father later recovered and published.

These days the preserved house is attached to a museum space that unravels the gripping plight of all those persecuted during World War II with a particularly critical look at The Netherlands itself. Far from presenting the horrors of the war as some warped tragedy of the past, the museum addresses current affairs and highlights ethical fault lines in western thinking. It's a great idea, but at times the questions raised are a little off pitch, begging yes or no answers to extremely complex questions.

Due to the popularity of the Anne Frank House it can be hard to find a time when the queues are not stretching around the corner. Generally speaking arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon is advisable.

The house is on Prinsengracht, the biggest of the four canals ringing the inner city and in many ways the most beautiful. All around are house boats, old Jordaan architecture and several cosy bars and restaurants. Around the corner on Rozengracht is the grand Westerkerk and the Homo monument, a memorial to all the gay men and women who were persecuted during World War II. It is an interesting area to spend a morning or afternoon in and Rozengracht (running more or less East West across the canal ring) has some nice shopping, bars and restaurants.
