Amsterdam Hotels near Artis Zoo

Amsterdam, the capital city and also the largest city of the Netherlands, is hugely popular for its bridges and canals. Amsterdam has more than 1280 bridges and around 165 canals.

However, it is not only the bridges and the canals that the city has to offer; there are many historical and other beautiful attractions to visit such as the Amsterdam central station, zoo Artis, the Docklands Island, de jordaan, and museums. When we talk about Artis, it is the oldest zoo of the country. Artis actually stands for Natura Arits Magistra, which means, Nature is the teacher of art. This zoo is located in the centre of the Amsterdam. Your trip to the city would be incomplete if you miss out on visiting Artis.

As far as the history of this zoo is concerned, the Artis was founded in the year 1838. Things have changed considerably since then, yet the trees, the paths, and the monumental historical buildings give this place a 19th century feel. This starts right from the main entrance, where 2 golden eagles are perched atop the entrance.

Artis is home to more than 8000 animals and around 750 different species of them. There are also over 300 different species of trees to be seen along with two huge museums, planetarium, farm for children and an Aquarium, which has been recently renewed. The zoo is open seven days a week from 9 in the morning till 5 in the evening. During the summers, the closing time is extended by one hour, that is, the zoo closes at 6 instead of 5, in the evening.

If you are not staying in one of the Amsterdam hotels near the city centre, then you can come to Dam Square or the Amsterdam central station. From here, the zoo is just a short walking distance away. However, if you don't want to walk, you can take tram number 9 from the station or number 14 from the square, to reach Artis. If you are driving to Artis, then the zoo has its own parking provision.

Tram 9 from Amsterdam Central Station stops close to Artis at the Plantage Kerklaan stop. Trams 10 and 14 also stop within walking distance of Artis. The closest metro station is Waterlooplein. It is a 10-minute walk from the metro station to the zoo entrance.
