Amsterdam Hotels near Central Station

Everything is interesting about Amsterdam, the capital city of Netherlands, whether it is canals, bridges, museums, flower floating market, historical buildings, squares, or even the Amsterdam Central Station itself.

If you are planning to visit the city in the near future hen you may want to stay near the Central Station because of travel reasons and the easy access to Schiphol Airport and the Thalys. There are many Amsterdam hotels to choose from, and a lot of hotels in Amsterdam are located near the central station.

This central station is really the centre, the heart of the city; it is not just in the name. It is the biggest spot for public transfer and serves not only the tourists, but also the city inhabitants. The station sees over 166,000 people passing through it every single day; this figure does not include the transferring passengers.

The main Amsterdam Tourist Office and departure quay for the tourist boats is also located here. The stations' building was built in between the years 1881 and 1889. This was the time when other important buildings of the city such as Rijksmuseum, Stadsschouwburg, and Concertgebouw etc were also constructed. All of these buildings were more or less concoction of Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Gothic styles. The building became open to public in the year 1889. The station building was designed by one of the most famous Dutch architects, Petrus J.H. Cuypers. He was assisted in this job by Adolf L. Gendt, who designed the station building's structure and its massive platform halls. The station was built using 8067 wooden piles, which formed 3 artificial small islands on the IJ Lake. The roof of the station was constructed from the cast iron.

Paintings by George Sturm, a painter of Austria origin, richly decorate the stations' inside as well as the facade. Cuypers received a gold medal for his design of central station by the Queen, in the year 1897.

With the growth of the city, the station also had to be changed. The last three decades have seen the Central Station to be steadily under construction.

Currently, the station area remains a massive construction site as the new metro line is being constructed here and is expected to be completed before the year 2015. Amsterdam central station is not only centre of the city but also of the whole country. All stations in the country and also the Amsterdam Schipol airport are very well connected to this station, so it is not at all difficult to reach here.

If you do book a hotel close to Central Station then you are within walking distance of the Red Light District, Joordan and Dam Square. The tram system serves Central Station very well and as soon as you exit the building you will see many tram stops.
