The huge Amsterdam Historical Museum houses more than 65,000 objects and artefacts. These include objects found in archaeological excavations offering clues about the city's past. The museum also holds portraits of city officials and militia officers.

The permanent collection includes the oldest plan of Amsterdam that exists to this date (c1538), a sculpture of the Virgin Mary that was found beneath the Nieuwezijdze Voorburgwal and was made before 1432, and Rembrant's Anatomy lesson of Dr. Jan Dieman, to name a few. The museum shows the history of the city, as it grew from a small medieval village into a hub of global tourism and international trade.

The museum's permanent exhibition focuses on the time period of the Dutch Golden Age, during the 17th century, when Amsterdam was the richest city in the world. Many of the exhibits display items that were traded during this time period, and show how the Dutch accumulated their wealth during this time.

The Museum is located within a complex of buildings that was once an orphanage, built in the 15th century. The permanent exhibitions are contained within the inner courtyards of the complex, divided by time periods, allowing visitors to manage their experience of the museum according to the period that they choose to explore. These include: The young city, the mighty city and the modern city. There is also a grand tour that allows visitors to experience Amsterdam's entire history, and this includes a new multimedia map that makes this particular experience quite extraordinary. Easily accessible from the city centre, the Amsterdams Historiche Museum is a short walk from Dam square or Spui. Most trams bound for Leidseplein from central station pass the museum.
