Amsterdam Hotels near Jewish Historical Museum

If you want to book a hotel close to the Jewish Historical Museum then there are several within a ten minute walk. These range from 1 star up to 4 star so you have a great choice.

Appropriately housed in an old synagogue, the Jewish Historical Museum collects artefacts from all over the Netherlands and the former Dutch colonies relating to the history of the Jews. The permanent collection is fascinating and the visiting exhibits are brilliantly selected, always insightful and often surprising.

The museum deals with culture, general history, and twentieth century history more or less separately. The exploration of twentieth century history is commendable for its even keeled approach to such ubiquitously difficult to explore episodes as the holocaust and the foundation of the state of Israel. This is a museum where everyone, religious and secular, can learn something about Jewish culture and faith.

Aside from fascinating displays of ceremonial instruments, there are a great many beautiful art works and an in depth discussion of the perplexing history of the Netherlands and its Jewish population. Temporary exhibits deal with all sorts of things with varying degrees of relevancy to the museum's central purposes. World class painters and photographers are often on display here, documenting different historical periods as well as current affairs. It also administers the nearby Hollandsche Schouwburg, originally a popular theatre but the tragic site of mass deportations of Amsterdam's Jews during the Nazi occupation. Today it is maintained as a monument and exhibition space to the more than 100,000 Dutch Jews who never returned from the camps.

It is a pretty large museum and worth setting aside some time for. The Jewish Historical Museum is located in the heart of the former Jewish quarter and a short walk from such other attractions as the Rembrandt House, Waterlooplein flea market, and Rembrandtsplein.

It is a pleasant area to cycle through and some of the most competitively priced bike rental shops are very close by. The museum is also easily accessed on foot from the city centre, the east and the areas around Rembrandtplein.
