Noordermarkt is a buzzing hub of activity every Saturday afternoon. People come from all over the city to visit this somewhat chaotic meeting of stalls and shoppers. Amsterdam has many open air markets, but of all of these Noordermarkt is the one with the most character and charm. Located in the heart of the Joordan, Noordermarkt is a great way to start any Saturday, or a fine way to wind down a busy afternoon.

The market has a long history having first come together in the early seventeenth century. The market's name is derived from the neighbouring Noorderkerk (Northern church) which was completed not long after. Still today this market draws locals and tourists alike. If you find yourself tired of the tourist stores and the higher prices in the city centre this is certainly worth exploring.

Amongst the many stalls you will find quality cheeses, fish, Turkish snacks, second hand books, clothing, flowers, electronics and much more. Compared to many of Amsterdam's other markets, Noordermarkt is not cheap, but the goods here tend to be high quality and the atmosphere friendly and fun. Half of the crowd comes to shop, the other half comes to sip coffee and people watch.

On the other side of the Noorderkerk, closer to Westerstraat is the biological market. Aside from fine organic foods, this market also does decorative arts and an assortment of other stalls. Though marginally more expensive, the food is of an excellent standard and more likely to be ready to eat making it a good choice for visitors staying in accommodation without cooking facilities.

Public transport to Noordermarkt is not great due to its location in the heart of the canals. However, it is a lovely walk to get there from most parts of the city. Walk or cycle towards the northern point of Prinsengracht where it meets with Brouwersgracht and follow the crowds. Driving is also possible but is not to be recommended as parking is very hard come by. By tram: tram 3 & 10, stop Marnixbad.
