Amsterdam's Torture Museum is definitely one for tourists and children. Having said that, the museum details all of the goriest aspects of a particularly dark chapter in Dutch history that some of the other museums shy away from.

It's all in the name really: Amsterdam's Torture Museum documents the stories of the various instruments and paraphernalia used to remind the commoners (and heretics!) of who was in charge. The Torture Museum seems to veer closer to theme park than preserve of historical knowledge but considering the matter under investigation, this may not be a bad thing.

Witch trials, the reformations, and a whole swathe of religious persecution are notable stains on the long standing history of Dutch tolerance. Visions of painful executions, excruciating punishments and deplorable methods of extracting confessions from unwilling prisoners make up the bulk of this small museums displays.

Perhaps not for everyone (particularly history sticklers) the torture museum is a great fun distraction in central Amsterdam. Young people on extended trips will find it an enjoyable break from some of the stuffier museums. Parents can certainly consider it a bargaining chip to convince the kids to visit cultural attractions. Torture and horror are really the name of the game at this fun, if not always informative, museum. Close to the flower market, Rembrandtsplein and a short walk to Leidseplein, the museum's location means that you can add it to your itinerary without too much forethought. It is easily reached by most trams heading south from central station lines 4, 9, 16, 24 and 25. Exit on the Munt plein stop.
